Somatic Therapy
You don’t just think about your memories. You feel them.
EMDR therapy incorporates somatic therapy by focusing on the connection between the body and unresolved trauma. During EMDR sessions, you will be guided to notice physical sensations in your body— such as tension, heaviness, tightness etc.— while processing distressing memories. These bodily sensations are seen as key indicators of how trauma is stored in the nervous systems.
By bringing attention to these sensations and allowing them to shift naturally during reprocessing, EMDR helps release trauma held in the body. This somatic awareness, combined with bilateral stimulation, supports a deeper integration of emotional and physical healing. It aligns with somatic therapy principles by addressing the body’s role in trauma recovery and promoting a sense of safety and regulation.
